Roadways staff stop private buses violating norms

Workers from the Roadways union were stationed at different points outside Jalandhar Bus Stand, PAP Chowk and Rama Mandir.

Punjab Roadways employees took it upon themselves to check private buses plying routes illegally after they noted that the government transport department failed to curb such operations.

Workers from the Roadways union were stationed at different points outside Jalandhar Bus Stand, PAP Chowk and Rama Mandir. They forced private buses to stop and asked them for their documents. “Nearly 10 private buses were found plying without permit or not on their allotted time.

The passengers on these buses were requested to deboard and were accommodated in other buses that were plying legally,” said Jagir Singh, general secretary, Punjab Government Transport Union (AITUC). He added that the Roadways suffered huge losses due to buses plying illegally.

Most of these private buses were alleged to be that of political leaders of the ruling alliance as well as opposition parties. Workers claim that political influence was affecting the state transport agency to lose money. The employees claim that they had complained to the Punjab transport minister many times earlier but in vain.
