The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports highlighting the drowning deaths of three children — two at a park in Mohali, one at a village — within 24 hours.
The commission noted that the reports pointed to administrative apathy in the incidents. While the police claimed to have inspected the sites and ruled out foul play, the administration reportedly had not even initiated a formal probe into the deaths.
Terming the issue grave, the commission has issued notices to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Deputy Commissioner (DC) of SAS Nagar (Mohali), directing them to submit detailed reports at least a week before the next hearing date.
The case, registered under complaint No. 5879/17/2025, will be listed for hearing on August 27, 2025. The order, jointly signed by Justice Gurbir Singh (member) and Justice Sant Parkash (chairperson), directs that copies of the commission’s order and the related news report be sent to both the SSP and DC via email and post for compliance.
