Major traffic chaos was witnessed at the roundabout of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, as the UT Engineering Department started re-carpeting the Dakshin Marg in front of GMCH-32 at a peak hour.
The road coming from Delhi and leading to GMCH-32 was diverted from the wrong side and it took half an hour for the traffic police to bring the traffic movement to normal.
Traffic Inspector Jasminder Singh said that extra force was deputed at the roundabout since morning. However, another traffic cop said that at 4 pm, the traffic cops were diverted to nakas which were to be laid from 4 pm to 6 pm.

Rohan Gupta, a resident of Zirakpur who was going towards Chandigarh, called the police control room twice to report that an ambulance was stuck in the traffic. “I made two calls to the PCR complaining that there were no policemen at the roundabout. The second time the call attendant refused to accept my claims.”
Gupta added that 20 minutes after he was stuck, the police came to regulate the traffic.
Another commuter, Suresh Chand, who was returning from work, said, “Why can’t they carry out this work at night? Everyone is rushing home from work and this is when they decide to repair the roads!”
UT Chief Engineer S K Chahda seemed unaware of the chaos and said that he would get the work stalled for some time.
Meanwhile, executive engineer Prem Pal said that he would instruct the contractor to stall the work at peak hours.
