With the decrease in temperature, power demand in the city has gone up by more than 25 per cent, pushing the Administration to approach power trading companies.
Increased use of heaters, geysers and other electrical gadgets has led to the spurt in demand.
The daily power consumption has gone up from 2.10 lakh units to 2.36 lakh,a record increase in winters.
Drawing more power than the allocated limit has put the Electricity department in a tight spot,as it has to spend almost double the usual amount,Superintending Engineer D P Singh said. Singh urged people to switch on geysers in the night when the demand is comparatively low.
We are monitoring the demand and supply daily. Whenever the frequency goes down,we have to buy electricity from power trading companies. At present,we are drawing 50 MW units (around 25 lakh units) per day from a power trading company, which costs almost double than the usual rates, Singh said.
He said judicious use of electrical gadgets would help in reducing over-drawing.
