Fulfilling his promise to an injured man he met in the US, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday paid an early morning visit to his family in the Karnal district of Haryana.
Rahul Gandhi landed at Amit’s home in the Ghogripur village of Karnal a little after 5 am, and met his mother, Birmati. While the Congress leader was at their house, Amit’s mother also made a video call to him in the US. He left Amit’s home at around 7.10 am.
Amit, 27, who went to the US about 18 months ago, was driving a truck when he met with an accident.
During his recent visit to the US, Rahul Gandhi met several men belonging to Haryana, including Amit. While interacting with Amit, he promised him that he would visit his family after he reached India.
After the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha left, Amit’s mother Birmati told reporters, “Raja gareeb ki kutiya mein aaya (The king came to a poor person’s hut). At about 5.15 am, a few people came to our home and identified themselves as Rahul Gandhi’s security personnel. About half an hour later, Rahul Gandhi arrived at our home and had a long conversation with us”.
Birmati, who lives with her elder son Ajit and his family, added that while leaving, Gandhi took some desi ghee and choorma from them.
Gandhi’s visit came as a surprise for many as only a few senior police officers had prior information about his trip to Karnal. Senior Haryana Congress leaders also had no clue about Gandhi’s sudden visit.
A Congress leader told The Indian Express, “Rahul Gandhi did not inform anybody about his visit. We later came to know that while in the US he had met Haryana’s youth who had spent lakhs of rupees to go to America through donkey routes. Amit was also one of those men and had started working as a truck driver there. Recently, he met with a major road accident while driving his truck. There is another man from the same village, Teji Mann, who was taking care of Amit in the US”.
Gandhi also met Congress party’s Haryana Assembly elections candidate Virender Rathore, who is contesting from the Gharaunda seat. He also went to Rathore’s residence and spent some time there.
