Punjab, Himachal Pradesh dams full to the brim, water release likely in event of more rain
The authorities said that in the event of more rain in the catchment areas of the dams, they will be forced to release water.

With nearly two months of monsoon period still left, dams in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have almost filled up to their maximum levels.
There are four dams in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, with two in the hill state – Bhakra (Gobind Sagar dam) and Pong Dam – located quite close to the Punjab border.
According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level in the Bhakra Dam on Sutlej River was 507.05 metre (m) on August 3 against the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 512.06m. Similarly, the Pong Dam on Beas River recorded 418.69m water level against the FRL of 423.67m. The Kol Dam in Himachal Pradesh registered a water level of 637.95m against the FRL of 642m. Whereas, the Thien Dam on Ravi River in Punjab filled up to 522.90m against the maximum level of 527.91m.
Meanwhile, three Himachal Pradesh dams held 9.527 billion cubic metre (BCM) of water Thursday. Last year, the figure was 5.519 BCM on the same date.
In Punjab, the Thien Dam recorded 1.999 BCM on August 3 against 1.477 BCM around the same time last year.
The authorities said that in the event of more rain in the catchment areas of the dams, they will be forced to release water.
