Punjab and Haryana HC seeks transcript of DGP Punjab’s statement on Lawrence Bishnoi interview

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday directed the submission of a transcript of the statement made by DGP Punjab Gaurav Yadav before his press conference regarding the Lawrence Bishnoi interview. This comes less than a month after the court had asked the DGP to disclose on affidavit the basis of his claim that the interview “had not taken place in any jail in the State of Punjab.”
Earlier, the HC had observed that the interview, conducted within the premises of the CIA office at Kharar in Mohali, suggested connivance with police officers. The court had then directed the DGP to explain his statement.
The division bench of Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal and Justice Lapita Banerji further ordered the Principal Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs and Justice, Punjab, to be present during the next hearing scheduled for December 2.
On Tuesday, the court recorded an affidavit filed by the DGP but emphasised that the transcript of his statement made before the press conference must be provided.
The Advocate General of Punjab assured the court that strict action had been initiated against the delinquent officers, with disciplinary proceedings underway. The Bench was informed that the Department of Home Affairs and Justice would handle action against officers of DSP rank and above.
Additionally, the ADGP Prisons, who appeared via video conferencing, requested time to file an affidavit outlining measures to strengthen jail security. The court directed the affidavit to be submitted before the next hearing.
