Punjab growth not figment of imagination: Sukhbir

Shiromani Akali Dal president and Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday alleged that Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh is defaming the state by claiming that its fiscal condition is “poor” and there is no development on the ground.

“The 7.5 per cent growth figure cannot be a figment of our imagination as it was the Union Minister of State for Planning Ashwani Kumar,who presented the data in Parliament,” Badal said in a statement issued here.

“According to the Union Minister,who hails from the state,Punjab achieved 7.5 percent growth in its GDP against a target of 5.9 percent. Punjab figured among the five states in the country that had achieved growth rates higher than the set targets,” he claimed

Badal said it was evident that Punjab has achieved higher growth figures despite “step-motherly treatment” from the UPA government at the Centre.

He claimed that Punjab’s shares in devolution of Central Taxes and allocations in special programmes were being reduced consistently.

Badal said it was unfortunate that instead of siding with the hardworking people of Punjab,some Congress leaders were tarnishing Punjab’s effort to return to its well deserved top position in the country.
