Two days after his license was suspended by the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, the Chandigarh Police on Friday arrested Vikas Malik, President of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association.

According to police sources, Malik was arrested under an FIR registered against him at Police Station Sector 3, Chandigarh, under sections 115(2), 126(2), 190, 191(2), 351(2), and 351(3) of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) on July 1, for allegedly assaulting another advocate, Ranjit Singh.

On July 10, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana also suspended Vikas Malik’s license and debarred him from practicing in any court of law.

The Bar Council’s committee stated, “We are also in utter shock and surprised to see the audacity and high-headedness of Malik, who has allegedly caused the disappearance of the hard disk/DVR from the premises of the PHHBA office and also seems to be a prima facie beneficiary of the said disappearance. We are conscious of the fact that an FIR is just a step to commence the investigation into the allegations leveled, but this illegal act of removing the hard disk clearly shows the intention and attempt on the part of Respondent No. 1 (Malik) to destroy the evidence,” said the committee.
