The Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections have erupted into controversy with candidate disqualifications, objections, student protests, and a leaked mark sheet raising questions of fairness and privacy.

Vice-presidential nomination on hold

Tensions flared after the nomination of Ashmeet Singh Maan, Sath’s candidate for vice-president, was put on hold over objections that he missed an exam in the previous semester.

Sath defended its nominee, saying Ashmeet skipped the exam due to medical reasons and has submitted a valid medical certificate. The party also claimed he already holds an approved High Court notice in his favour.

Confusion deepened when Ashmeet’s name was missing from both the eligible and ineligible lists. “That’s why we had to protest. We’ve been sitting on dharna outside the DSW office for the last seven–eight hours. This is a mass protest,” said a Sath student leader.

Objection against presidential candidate

Meanwhile, a formal objection was filed against presidential aspirant Sumit Kumar, alias Sumit Sharma, accusing him of violating Lyngdoh Committee Guidelines and PU election bye-laws. The complaint alleges that Sumit had academic arrears in the preceding year, making him ineligible under Clause 4.1 of Lyngdoh, which bars candidates with pending arrears.

The objection warns that permitting such nominations would “destroy the spirit of Lyngdoh reforms” and could amount to contempt of court, citing the 2007 High Court ruling in Burning Brains Society vs Union of India.

Mark sheet leak sparks privacy debate

The controversy escalated when Sumit’s mark sheet went viral on social media, triggering outrage over the handling of students’ personal data. Critics slammed the breach as a sign of poor safeguards for privacy. Sumit declined to comment, saying, “I would not like to give a quote on it as of now, we are waiting for the final list.”
