A 40-year-old man employed as an assistant at Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has been arrested for allegedly murdering his mother by slitting her throat at their residence in Sector 40-D, Chandigarh, on Monday morning.
The accused has been identified as Ravinder Singh Negi alias Ravi. The victim, Sushila Negi (60), a widow, had been living with her younger son Ravi, while her elder son is reportedly settled abroad.
According to the police, the incident took place around 7 am. A neighbour, Akash Bains (40), reported that he heard loud cries coming from the Negis’ house while having tea. When he and other residents gathered outside, they found the main door bolted from inside. Moments later, Ravi came out of the house, his clothes stained with blood. On entering the house, the neighbours found Sushila lying in a pool of blood, grievously injured. They immediately called the police.
A team from the Sector 39 police station, along with experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), reached the spot and cordoned off the area. Forensic samples and a sharp-edged knife, allegedly used in the murder, were recovered from the scene.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that a heated argument had broken out between the mother and son in the morning, which turned violent. In a fit of rage, Ravinder allegedly attacked his mother with the knife, inflicting fatal injuries on her neck. She died on the spot.
The police registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Sector 39 police station. The body was shifted to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, for post-mortem examination.
