At the end of the second round of counselling for BTech courses in Punjab Technical University (PTU) colleges, over 70 per cent seats remained vacant. Now,after the third and final counselling session which was thrown open to students from across India the colleges have received only 9,251 registerations against the 19,691 seats available.
As no applications have been received for 10,440 seats, now PTU colleges will have to fill up these seats on their own by organising admission fairs in other states.
Out of a total of 38,000 seats under PTU colleges, counselling was to be conducted for 26,663 seats. The remaining were to be filled by individual colleges under their management quota system.
However, the PTU has received applications for only 10,440 out of these 26,663 seats. Now,for the 40 per cent seats that are lying vacant, individual colleges will have to admit students from other states.
According to sources in the PTU,it is difficult to say how many students, who were allotted seats in the final counselling, would actually take admission. Earlier as well, seats were allotted over 19,000 students in the first two rounds of counselling, but only 6,972 students took admission.
