Prospectus for Class XI admission creates confusion

The prospectus for centralised admission to Class XI,released by the Education department on Tuesday, says students should submit attested copies of their certificates for admission.

This is in contradiction to the UT Administration’s decision in January 2007. In order to simplify the admission process, the Administration had instructed all educational institutions do away with the practice of asking for attested certificates.

Subsequently,a notification was sent to schools and colleges in June 2007 when it was found that some of these were not implementing the orders.

However, point number 14 in the current admission form states that students should submit attested copies of their certificates along with the form.

“Only a gazetted officer is competent to attest certificates and most of the times they are busy. When the Administration has made a rule, the department should follow it,” said a parent Monica Singh.

“It is redundant practice. The aim behind asking for attested certificates is to ensure that students do not submit fake certificates, but there is no proof to ensure that the attested copies are authentic. It is just another reason to complicate admissions,” R K Garg,an advocate, said.

Samwartak Singh,Director Public Instructions (School),tried to clarify: “Attested means self-attested. Students need not get it attested from a gazetted officer. We have instructed principals and those manning the counters to tell this to the students.” Meanwhile, there was no word from the Education department about the matter.
