Sharing his views on higher education in the country,JNU Chancellor Professor Yash Pal said it was high time universities were granted autonomy. He also vouched for implementing the proposal of evaluating teachers. Professor Yash Pal was in Panjab University to attend a two-day seminar organised by the Philosophy department in the ICCSR Hall. On his recommendations regarding higher education which are lying pending with the Ministry of Human Resource Development,he said,It is high time that those recommendations get implemented and they should not be diluted. It can be the vested interests of a few that is probably restricting the ministry to take up the suggestions. Professor Yash Pal also said that educational institutions should be kept away from politics and this can happen only when they are given the freedom and space to grow independently. Commenting on the failure in implementing the teachers evaluation,he said,There is nothing that cannot be done. In a university, rights should be given to both the teaching as well as the student fraternity who can put forward their views. He added that there was no harm even if the vice-chancellor had to be evaluated. He maintained that importance should not be given to only educational qualifications rather the focus should be on the caliber of an individual.
