Poor condition of weapons irks SSP

Calls for regular servicing of arms; police parade to be held every Monday

At the first weekly parade of the UT police today, the new UT SSP was the ‘least impressed’ with the efficacy of the force especially with regard to the technical equipment. Taken aback by the poor condition of weapons available with the cops,Naunihal Singh pressed upon cleaning and servicing of the weapons, some of which were found to be in dire straits. Around 650 police personnel turned up for the parade.

During a round of the technical equipment available with the police today, the SSP stumbled upon a constable wobbling with a pistol in hand. While the constable was asked to check his weapon tucked in his uniform, the constable was unaware of its handling.

“Be careful, you will shoot yourself this way,” said the SSP when the constable was trying to examine the weapon by pointing the trigger on to himself. After a brief lesson of handling of the weapon, the officer moved to the next constable and found his revolved covered with rust.

“How will you shoot with this weapon? It’s of no use,” were the words of the SSP following which he instructed the officers to get their weapons serviced and cleaned regularly. He also instructed the DSP Lines to impart regular training in handling of weapons to the force.

Weapons apart, the condition of the Police Control Room Vehicles also left much to be desired. None of the two dozen PCRs that the SSP inspected had uniform features. While some of the vehicles were equipped with Light Emitting Mode (LED) blinkers, the blinkers were defunct in other vehicles.

Urging that all the vehicles should be well equipped with blinkers, the SSP moved on to the vehicles of the DSPs and the SHOs and found them to be the same. “Why is there no demarcation between the vehicles of the DSP and the SHOs?” he asked while instructing that the vehicles of the SHOs should have stickers on their jeeps specifying the police station of which the SHO is incharge.

In addition, instructions were also issued for bringing more staff into the PCRs. Over 100 women cops displayed stunts to counter mob during agitations and rallies. The woman cops were awarded a commendation certificate by the SSP.

“The force has been instructed to get the weaponry serviced as a large number of pistols need repair. The parade will be held every Monday,” the SSP said.
