Police to double fleet of PCR Gypsies

The Chandigarh Police is all set to double its fleet of police control room vans to cater to the demand of rising crime graph and a growing city.

The Chandigarh Police is all set to double its fleet of police control room vans to cater to the demand of rising crime graph and a growing city. While a proposal for mooting 11 more police stations in the city is already on the cards, the police have shot off another proposal for purchasing 33 new police control vehicles at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore.

The police have at present a total of 33 Gypsies of the police control room stationed across various crime prone areas of the city. According to senor police officials, these are not sufficient to cover the entire union territory of Chandigarh . The addition of gypsies will go a long way in improving the response time of the PCRs to distressed calls or accidents spots. The induction of more vehicles will also have a deterrent effect on anti social and criminal elements and will also enable round the clock surveillance, said police officials.

The police also said that it has been seen that the new Gypsies will be stationed across southern sectors and the city’s outskirts. “The gypsies will be of tremendous importance in curtailing the response time of the police,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police,PCR,Roshan Lal.

The police also said that the motorcycles with the PCRs were not a favourable venture and they have returned most of the motorcycles to the police station. “For patrolling purposes also gypsies suit better as one they are useful in extreme weather conditions but motorcycles are not, that’s why a number of them were returned to police stations from the PCR. The addition of gypsies will cater to the growing demand and rising crime graph,” added Roshan Lal.

Besides, the UT police has also equipped the PCR Gypsies with Light Emitting Mode (LED) blinkers to make them more visible at their respective points during late evening and night hours. The police has decided to base the cars at the main round-abouts of city from 9 am to 11 am and from 6pm to midnight . The staff posted on these PCR mobiles has been provided gloves to lift burnt, injured persons smudged with blood and dead bodies. Besides this, they have also been provided masks to protect them from infectious diseases while lifting infected persons
