Soon after the swearing-in of Nayab Singh Saini as the Chief Minister of Haryana for the second time on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a half-day conclave commemorating 75 years of the Constitution –referred to as Samvidhan Ka Amrit Mahotsav –in Chandigarh.
The agenda includes discussing the “attempt to murder” of democracy during the Emergency 50 years ago, and addressing national development issues.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President JP Nadda are also expected to attend the event, which will see nearly all NDA Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers in attendance. At present, the country has 13 Chief Ministers and 16 Deputy Chief Ministers from the BJP, while its allies are in power in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Sikkim, Nagaland, and Meghalaya.
The conclave comes at a time when the opposition has accused the Modi government of endangering the Constitution, particularly ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The ruling alliance views this as an opportunity to counter the Congress, especially after recent electoral victories in Haryana and upcoming polls in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
