PGI faculty members seek new director from within

Days ahead of the crucial institute body meeting of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research.

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to chair Governing body and Institute body meeting in Chandigarh tomorrow

Days ahead of the crucial institute body meeting of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research,(PGIMER),the faculty members of the institute have decided to call on Union Health Minister urging him to appoint the new director from the institute only.

“We have sought an appointment to discuss various issues concerning the institute,including the appointment of the new director,with the minister and hopefully we will meet him on Monday,” said the President of the PGI faculty Association Dr Virendra Singh.

The Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will be chairing the PGI’s Governing body and institutes body meeting in Chandigarh on Monday. The institutes body will also significantly select a search committee to look for the new director to succeed the present incumbent professor K K Talwar who retires on May 1 2011,after serving for seven years. Talwar has hinted that he was not interested in another extension.

The PGI faculty which is keen on seeing the new director from the institute argues that they have a talented pool of senior professor who can take the regions premier institute to the new heights.

“The faculty members in PGI know the institute well as they have been working in this system. The senior professor are competent to handle any situation. So it will be always good to select the new director from the institute,” said a senior faculty member. There are nearly dozen faculty members of the PGIMER who are in race for the post.

The faculty is likely has decided to also give a representation to the Union Health Ministry explaining as as to why they want an insider to head the PGIMER.

The PGIMER has already sought nominations for the post of Director from Vice-Chancellors of Indian Universities,Directors of the Centre/Institution of medical education and research,members of the institute body,PGIMER Chandigarh and Principals of all medical colleges in India.
