PGI admission scam: Two junior resident doctors in CBI net

The two doctors — Amit Musale and Sujay Sonawane who are pursuing postgraduation in the hospital — have reportedly confessed that they came directly for the medical tests after “clearing” the exams. Sonawane wanted paediatrics and Musale had opted for pharmacology for their postgraduation degrees. Both are from Maharashtra and had failed to clear the admission tests. One of the entrance exams was held in December 2008 and the other recently.

The two were contacted by the touts soon after,following which impersonators were identified to write the entrance test for the MD course for them. The cost of the seat,depending on the choice of the branch,ranged from Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1.2 crore. The agents assured that everything could be managed and the clients need not worry once the advance payment was made.

The doctors will be produced in the CBI court on Wednesday where the investigating agency will seek their police custody.

With their arrest,the CBI claims to have unearthed a major scam running across various medical institutions in the country. The investigating agency said more junior doctors of the PGI were under scanner. It has also seized some documents,including the answer sheets of the two students,and are matching their signatures and handwriting with those on the answer sheets.

During a raid,the CBI sleuths seized a number of incriminating documents and other material which point to the wide reach of their network. A PGI spokesperson said,“We have started verifying credentials of all resident doctors who have joined in the last two years. We are extending full cooperation to all investigative agencies involved.”
