The delay in Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) water supply projects is making Panchkula residents anxious,as water shortage is aggravating with fast depleting ground water levels. Now,the Panchkula Residents Welfare Federation (PRWF) has written to HUDA,urging it to speed up work on various projects.

“As the ground water level falls, its high time we deal with the problem head on and save as much drinking water as possible. One of the best and immediate solutions is to re-use treated sewerage and non-drinking water for parks, fountains and swimming pools, which HUDA plans to set up in the near future,” Subhash Papneja, general secretary of the Federation said.

While there have been talks on setting up various sewerage treatment plants in Sectors 20 and 28 for the past five years, the projects are still at the initial stage,Papneja said.

“Also, there was another proposal to bring drinking water for Panchkula residents from the Kaushalya dam, which is under construction. We have written to HUDA to speed up the process of construction of these long pending treatment plants,” he added.

HUDA officials, meanwhile, said,“The Sector 28 project is in the last stage of completion and will be functional by last week of September. Tenders for the one in Sector 20 have been invited. It was due to the election code of conduct that the Sector 20 project got a little delayed.”
