Panchkula mayor vows to provide corruption-free development

Panchkula Mayor,Upinder Ahluwalia,has risen from the ranks slowly. Having started as a sarpanch of Fatehpur village in 1995,in the last 18 years,she has held different political positions and been a member of Panchkula Municipal Council twice before being elected with a majority vote to the Corporation as the city’s first mayor on Thursday. As city mayor,she will hold the office for five years.

Ahluwalia had been a grassroots Congress worker for years before she rose to the top position. Having been elected,she said that her priority is to check corruption in the execution of developmental works in the city and she will ensure that the city’s development takes pace. “My priority is to give a clean administration to the city,” she said.

The family of the city mayor owns a large piece of agricultural land,and has revealed its assets to be worth over Rs 40 crore in the disclosures before the state election commission ahead of the polls. Ahluwalia started as sarpanch of Fatehpur village in 1995 and remained at the post till 2000 before she joined as a member of Panchkula Zila Parishad and held the position till 2005. Subsequently she was elected to the Panchkula Municipal Council as a member twice before she became the city mayor.

Her husband,Dhanender Ahluwalia,who is the member of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) said that his wife has risen from the ranks. The husband and wife used to replace each other as the sarpanchs of Fatehpur village. Dhanender was all praise for chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for the success of his wife in the mayoral elections,stating that his wife’s rise to the top post “became possible due to the blessing of the chief minister.”

A stream of visitors on Friday came to greet the family at Fatehpur village in Sector 20 in the city.

The city Mayor said that she would ensure the timely completion of developmental works adding that the condition of some of the sectors in the city is “pathetic”. “Among all the sectors,it is Sector 20 which has remained neglected over the years. Besides the broken roads it is highly populated and there is need for a special focus on the development of areas like these,” she said,adding that she would however also ensure an overall development of the city.

Besides being the mayor,Upinder is a doting mother as well. Upinder’s rise to the post of mayor has been the proudest moment for the family. Her son,Samar Ahluwalia,distributed sweets to the visitors who came to the house to greet the family. Upinder has two sons,Samar and a daughter who has done her MBA from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT).
