Gynaecology experts from medical colleges across the region met in Haryana’s Panchkula on Sunday, November 30, to deliberate on ways to manage high-risk pregnancies and reduce maternal mortality.
The conference took place against the backdrop of data from the Sample Registration System released earlier this year, which showed Haryana’s maternal mortality ratio had dipped to 89 per lakh live births in 2020–22, compared to 106 in 2019–21—a significant reduction of 17 points.
The conference was organised by the Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Panchkula in collaboration with the London-based Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG).
Association secretary Dr Bhavna Aggarwal said that the discussions focused on promoting safe delivery practices and ensuring the well-being of both mother and child. She explained that reducing maternal mortality in high-risk pregnancies requires early detection of risk factors and improved prenatal care, including supplementation and nutritional counselling.
Association president Dr Renu Chakravarty noted that around 150 gynaecologists, along with postgraduate students from government and private colleges, participated in the event. Haryana’s additional chief secretary (health) Sudhir Rajpal and Director General (health) Dr Manish Bansal also addressed the gathering.
