Despite the deadline fast approaching, only 500 or about 12 per cent of people have so far applied for the installation of solar panels of the total 4,000 who have received notices sent by the Chandigarh Administration.
A senior official of the UT Administration confirmed that the last date to comply with is November 6. “We had sent notices to 3,941 people and so far only 500 people have applied. We are not planning to extend the date,” the official said. The official also added that the administration is also facing the issue of 500 disputed properties, which are to be sent notices.
“These properties are divided amongst multiple owners so we are facing issues pertaining to these,” the official added.
Till now, the administration has sent notices to those with one kanal and above properties. If they do not comply with the notices, the UT administration said they would resume (take over) their properties.
After discussion with the Chandigarh administrator, the deputy commissioner had also said that no relief or additional time shall be given to those who have not applied for solar panels after the notice of resumption (taking over) has been sent.
On October 5, Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria had asked officials to grant some more time to people who have been served notices of resumption of their property for failing to install a solar plant.
Thousands of house owners have been served notices for resumption (taking over) of their property if solar power plants are not installed at their houses within two months. The notices have been issued by the Chandigarh estate office for violation of building rules.
The notices served on over 4,000 houses of 500 square yards and above by the Chandigarh estate office said in case the owner does not ensure compliance within two months of this notice, his property shall be resumed/cancelled under the provisions of the said bylaws.
According to officials of Chandigarh Administration, 1,867 house owners have installed solar power plants at their houses while over 4,500 are yet to do it.
Earlier, the administration had made it mandatory for houses above 500 square yards to install solar plants. It intends to send notices to 250 square yards and above as it has been revised to 250 square yards, i.e., owners of houses 250 square yards and above need to mandatorily install these plants.
