The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) on Tuesday approved a proposal in its House meeting to introduce a single pass for all paid parking sites across the city.

According to the approved proposal, four-wheeler owners will now be able to get a monthly pass for Rs 500, valid at every paid parking lot in Chandigarh. Similarly, two-wheeler owners can avail a Rs-250 pass.

The MC expects this initiative to generate a minimum of Rs 50 crore and up to Rs 100 crore in annual revenue.

A recent survey revealed that nearly 70 per cent of residents supported the idea of a Rs 500 monthly pass for cars, applicable at all paid sites. At present, parking passes are restricted to selected locations and cost Rs 420 for cars and Rs 210 for two-wheelers.

The concerned committee had earlier recommended introducing both monthly and quarterly passes for cars and two-wheelers, with unlimited entry and exit, to simplify the parking process, enhance public convenience, and boost municipal revenue.

Paid parking for tourist buses

The House also approved the conversion of free parking zones in Hallomajra/Ram Darbar and behind Fun Republic, Manimajra, into paid parking facilities for tourist buses.

The Ram Darbar site, developed at a cost of nearly Rs 1 crore, is currently being used free of cost by local residents. Under the approved proposal, the MC’s engineering wing will conduct a 15-day to one-month trial phase to assess financial viability.
