Ten days after Amarjit Kaur, 76, an NRI woman based in Canada, filed a complaint accusing AAP MLA Sarvjit Kaur Manuke of occupying her house in Heera Bagh colony of Jagraon, the Ludhiana rural police Monday registered an FIR on the basis of a statement by Karam Singh – the person from whom the MLA had taken the said house on rent.

Karam Singh has claimed that one Ashok Kumar of Jagraon ‘sold’ him the house on the basis of a fake power of attorney.

Amarjit Kaur had flown to India and filed a complaint on June 8 alleging that the two-time AAP MLA and her family were living in her house illegally. However, Manuke claimed that she had taken the house on rent from Karam Singh. On the basis of the NRI woman’s complaint, an inquiry was initiated by the Ludhiana rural police to find out the actual owner of the house. Manuke later said that she vacated the house and returned the keys to Karam Singh.

On Monday, the Ludhiana rural police registered an FIR against Ashok Kumar on the complaint of Karam Singh who has alleged that Kumar duped him by selling the said house on the basis of a fake power of attorney created in the name of Amarjit Kaur.

However, the Opposition Congress and Amarjit Kaur’s son are demanding action against Karam Singh and MLA Manuke for “encroaching and illegally occupying” the house.

In his statement, Karam Singh said that he had purchased the house from Ashok Kumar after the latter had produced documents claiming Amarjit Kaur had transferred the power of attorney in his (Ashok’s) name. He further stated that after buying the house, he rented it out to MLA Manuke and her family who were looking for a residential property. He added that after Amarjit Kaur claimed that she never sold the house to anyone, he got documents checked from the revenue department and it was found that the power of attorney was fake. The FIR has been registered under Sections 420, 467, and 468 of the Indian Penal Code at Jagraon city police station.

Ludhiana rural SSP Navneet Singh Bains said: “The inquiry is still ongoing but as per the facts which have come forth till now, Ashok Kumar sold the house to Karam Singh on the basis of a fake power of attorney that also had signatures of Amarjit Kaur, which were most probably forged. The land records show that Karam Singh had purchased this house from Ashok Kumar in May this year (11.05.2023) on the basis of a power of attorney dated 21.03.2005 that was found to be fake. We have registered the FIR against Kumar on the complaint of Karam Singh who claims that he was also duped.”

Paramjit Singh, son of the NRI woman, said that they were not satisfied with the FIR registered against Kumar. “How can someone get a registry of a house done on the basis of fake documents? And then how can an MLA start living in the house without verifying its credentials? It is not possible that the entire crime, right from issuing the fake power of attorney to the registry, was committed by one person. It would not have been possible without the connivance of revenue officials and many others. We demand action against the MLA who started living in our house and every person who was involved in this property-grabbing mafia,” he said.

Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira tweeted: “…So now if POA (Read power of attorney) of Ashok Kumar is fake so the sale deed executed by him in favor of Karam Singh is also illegal so he couldn’t rent the house to AAP MLA Saravjit Manuke hence she becomes trespasser! Will Bhagwant Mann and Punjab DGP register a proper FIR against MLA & Karam Singh… b’coz if they don’t it’ll be presumed they’re protecting the actual land mafia…”
