Much to the relief of patients with brain tumours,the Department of Neurosurgery,PGI,has started gamma knife,the latest and the only module available in Asia of its type,ie,Perfexion. Under the facility,lesions of a paricular size and type can be tackled without any surgery through the precision dose of targeted radiation.

Doctors at the PGI said: “This fully automated facility with a choice of various sized collimeters reduces treatment time and makes the procedure safe with less chances of manual errors.”

Gamma Knife can safely be given to lesions of less than 3 centimetres. The indications are to be properly formulated for an individual patient and dose for a specific type of lesion is to be prescribed by the gamma knife team.
