The residents of Nayagaon held a demonstration against the Parkash Singh Badal-led Punjab government on Saturday.
Led by senior Congress leader Rajbir Singh Padiala, hundreds of protesters were up in arms against the lack of basic civic amenities in the area.
After holding a protest rally outside a gurdwara in Nayagaon, the agitated protestors, including a few elected public representatives, marched towards the Chief Ministers residence.
Holding banners and placards with anti-government messages, the residents rented the air with slogans against the ruling SAD-BJP combine, which they claimed had failed on all fronts. They also carried empty buckets and lanterns to depict the poor condition of water and power supply in the area.
The situation became tense when the police intercepted protesters at the Punjab-Chandigarh border, barely 500 metres from the CMs official residence.
It took several police personnel, led by Nayagaon SHO Lakhwinder Singh,to control the frayed tempers.
After much persuasion,a seven-member delegation was allowed to move ahead to submit their memorandum at the CM residence.
As Badal was not available, one of his OSDs accepted the memorandum and assured the delegation to solve their problems within a fortnight.
Padiala said Nayagaon residents were living in poor conditions with no provision of civic amenities even over three years after the area was accorded the status of a Municipal Corporation.
Majority of the area is still locked under Forest Acts with restriction on development and issuance of water, power connections and ration cards, he claimed, while threatening to intensify the stir if the demands were not met.
