Nabha jailbreak: 22 accused, including 3 escapees, held guilty

The Patiala court of special judge HS Grewal Tuesday held 22 accused guilty and acquitted six others in the sensational 2016 Nabha jailbreak case.
On November 27, 2016, a group of gangsters dressed as policemen opened fire at security guards at high security Nabha jail and freed four gangsters and two terrorists who were lodged in jail.
Of six prisoners who had managed to escape, three have been held guilty, while two others died during proceedings.
One is still absconding and was declared a proclaimed offender. The quantum of punishment for 22 accused held guilty will be pronounced Thursday.
The jailbreak mastermind gangster Gurpreet Singh Sekhon and two other gangsters Kulpreet Singh alias Neeta Deol and Amandeep Singh alias Dhotiyan — the trio which had escaped from jail and were re-arrested later — are among 28 held guilty. Another accused gangster Vicky Gounder who had escaped, was later killed in a police encounter. Another escapee Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) terrorist Harminder Singh Mintoo was also re-arrested from Delhi but died later of cardiac arrest in the prison. Another extremist Kashmir Singh is still absconding and was declared proclaimed offender by the court.
All 22 accused held guilty are already lodged in different jails of the state and were produced in the hearings via video conferencing (remove this line).
The jailbreak mastermind Sekhon was re-arrested on February 12, 2017, by the counter intelligence wing of Punjab Police from Dhudike village of Moga along with his three accomplices who had given him shelter after escape from Nabha jail. According to police, Sekhon had hatched Nabha jailbreak conspiracy from jail. On November 27, 2016, his cousin Manvir Sekhon and Rajwinder Raja alias Sultan were among those who had launched the attack at the prison to help gangsters escape. They were working on orders of Sekhon who was inside the jail. Booked in 13 FIRs including murder and attempt to murder, Sekhon was the prime accused in rival Sukha Kahlwan murder case. He is from Mudki village of Ferozepur. He was arrested in March 2016 in Kahlwan murder case before he fled from Nabha jail. A trained flight attendant, he belonged to a rich family owning brick kilns and agricultural land, but ended up as gangster after being booked in an Arms Act case in 2007.
Of the 36 accused in the case, 22 have been convicted, six acquitted, two died and six others were declared proclaimed offenders. The FIR was registered under the sections 307, 392, 223, 224, 120-B, 148, 149, 201, 419, 170, 171, 353, 186, 212, 216, 476, 468, 471 and 489 of IPC, 25 of Arms Act and 11, 13, 16,17, 18, 20 of UAPA and 22/29 of NDPS Act at Kotwali Nabha police station.
