Music on his mind

You can take Punjabi out of the ghazal,but you can’t take the ghazal out of this Punjabi! RD Kailey has everyone buzzing about his evening of Punjabi ghazals,along with singer Komal Chugh. He may be as melodious as a seasoned singer,but he clarifies that singing is his passion,not vocation. An assistant general manager at Punjab National Bank,Kailey is currently posted in Patna as the circle head,where two of his compositions were recently aired on Doordarshan. After winning everyone’s heart,he is now ready to floor the city’s music enthusiasts with his melodies,set to the words of renowned poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi. “His poems are a class apart and not easy to give justice to,” smiles the singer,who specializes in singing ghazals penned by him and has as many as 50 compositions to his credit. “I keep trying new ways of presenting them,” Kailey’s taken formal training in music from Lashman Das Sandhu and Mahinder Sareen. Despite work,two hours of riyaaz daily is a must for him,“ghazal is the song of the soul and should be sung in a way that it appeals to the spirit.”
