Former first-class cricketer Sandeep Maoudgil will lead India Lawyers XI in the first Indo-Pak Lawyers Harmony Cricket Cup Twenty-20 match that will be played on July 23 at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh. The match is being organised on the initiative of The Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana.
Addressing a press conference today,Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana chairman Partap Singh said that “In order to maintain harmony and extend brotherhood,the match is being organised between the two countries. Basically,through means of sports we want to enhance harmony. The fact that sports is followed in both countries masses inspired us to organise such a match. The legal fraternity has taken up the cause to harness friendship between the two neighbouring countries which have the same language,culture,customs and traditions.”
Meanwhile,BCPH secretary Rajeev Keswan said former first class cricketer Sandeep Moudgil,who is advocate of the Punjab and Haryana High Court,has been appointed captain of the Indian team. Moudgil,who is also secretary of the Panchkula District Cricket Association,expressed that there cannot be any other better way between India and Pakistan than sports to create coordination,friendship to strengthen relationship as a good neighbour.
Partar Singh said that a 33-member team,including delegates,will reach Chandigarh Thursday evening via road through Wagha Border in Amritsar.Mumtaz Mustafa of Bahawalpur is the manager of the Pakistan team also informed that the team will just play one match in Chandigarh and not travel to any other Indian city. Although,the visitors propose to visit Delhi,Agra and Ajmer Sharif apart from Chandigarh.
Regarding the composition of the Indian lawyers team,Moudgil said “The team would be announced by Thursday evening. Besides,Moudgil,other first class cricketer in the Indian team will be Puneet Bedi. Adity Chaudhary (Supreme Court),Madhav Mitra (Rajasthan),Sunil Gaur (AP),GS Anand (Karnataka),Kuldeep Prihar and Nikki Kantiwala (both Delhi) have also staked their claim for inclusion in the Indian lawyers team. Qualified umpires of Board of Control for Cricket in India,Desh Deepak and Jaswinder Singh,have been appointed umpires.
