“The maximum number of complainants are from the economically weaker sections. On analysing the data, we also found that most accused are either known to the complainant or are neighbours,” the SSP added.

In 2013, 204 cases were reported and this year so far 17 cases have been reported. In 2012, the number of cases reported were 130. Rajiv Singla, a shopkeeper in Sector 27 said, “It is good that more women are coming forward and are reporting about the crime.”

When asked how the problem can be handled, the SSP said that the only solution was more reportage of the crime and increase in awareness levels.

“We have adopted a zero tolerance policy for cases of molestation. The person is immediately arrested and legal action is initiated,” the SSP said, adding more reporting and swift punishment will lead to more deterrence.

As per the annual review, of 103 cases, only two cases are unsolved as the accused were unknown persons and could not be traced.

For keeping a check on the crime, women police officers have been deputed at all public places, CTU buses and near educational institutions to nab the accused at the spot.

A software engineer working at the IT Park said, “Women should be reporting such cases and that is the only way we can deal with this menace. We should not be tolerating this.”

Recently, the UT Police had arrested a retired colonel Charanjit Singh for allegedly harassing the women staff members at the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration in Sector 26.
