With traffic snarls turning daily commutes into nightmares across the tricity, Mohali Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has urged the Punjab Traffic Police ADGP to immediately deploy at least 500 additional personnel in Mohali to tackle the worsening traffic situation.
In a letter to the ADGP, Bedi highlighted that vehicular pressure shot up drastically during the festive season, leading to massive traffic jams on crucial stretches, including the Kharar-Dera Bassi Road, Airport Road, Sectors 76-80, Phases 7-11, and the Chandigarh-Ambala Highway and Patiala Road in Zirakpur.
“The current strength of traffic police in Mohali is far too low to handle the existing rush. The situation has become unmanageable,” Bedi said.
He added that the congestion is not only inconveniencing daily commuters, but also blocking the movement of ambulances, school buses and emergency vehicles, posing a serious safety concern for senior citizens, women and office-goers.
Bedi said, “If required, traffic personnel from the Punjab Armed Police (PAP), Jalandhar, or other paramilitary units will be temporarily deployed in Mohali, Kharar and Zirakpur to restore normalcy and prevent chaos. This move will benefit the entire tricity since Mohali, Kharar, and Zirakpur act as key entry and exit routes to Chandigarh.”
Bedi stressed that proactive measures must be taken before the festive rush peaks to ensure public safety and smoother mobility across the region.
