Mohali residents are struggling to breathe as garbage piles up across the city, with 15 to 20 trolleys loaded with waste parked unattended in Sector 78 — a grim symbol of the city’s worsening cleanliness crisis.

Mohali Mayor Amarjeet Singh Jeeti Sidhu attacked the government, accusing it of making “hollow and hypocritical claims” about cleanliness while letting the city drown in filth. He alleged that “the state government and MLA Kulwant Singh have ruined Mohali” and are “trying to defame the Municipal Corporation by deliberately stalling the cleaning work”.

“The people of Mohali are educated and aware. They know exactly who is responsible for this mess,” said Mayor Sidhu, who visited Sector 78 along with Senior Deputy Mayor Amreek Singh Somal and several councillors.

The contractor in charge of garbage collection, Lalit, parked 15 trolleys full of waste in a public parking area, claiming there is no dumping site available. “We have no place to dump the waste while the government falsely claims that a site has been provided,” he said.
Sanitation workers and trolley drivers expressed fear, alleging that “armed men guard the supposed dumping area and threaten us if we try to enter”. One driver said, “We risk our lives every day just to dispose of the city’s waste. This has become dangerous.”

Mayor Sidhu, after inspecting the situation, said, “The MLA shows one thing and does another. His decisions have worsened the city’s garbage crisis many times over.”

He warned that if no dumping ground is allotted soon, “the garbage-laden trolleys will be parked right outside the DC office”.

The contractor clarified that most of the waste comprises green waste (tree trimmings, grass, and dry debris), but residents often dump household garbage and plastic, creating unbearable stench and pollution. “Without a designated dumping site, we cannot continue this work,” he said.

Mayor Sidhu appealed to the DC, Commissioner, and SSP to provide security to contractors and finalise a disposal site immediately. He cautioned, “If the government still does not act, the next time these trolleys will stand outside the DC office, the Local Government Department in Chandigarh, and even the Chief Minister’s residence.”

He said, “Mohali needs a solution now, no more showmanship. If the government continues to sleep, the people themselves will rise, and the responsibility will lie entirely with those in power.”
