Thirty-five-year-old government school teacher Harpreet Kaur, who was shot in the eye and right leg by unknown assailants, alleged that the Moga police failed to identify the miscreants even after two months. Kaur, who needs support while walking and has the left side of her jaw swollen, said,The police has failed to arrest an obvious suspect. I have been left with no option, but to bear the humiliation of being attacked brutally and then being denied justice. On February 27,Kaur was shot at point blank range outside her school in Raunta village near Moga. A day later the police booked her Canada-based husband Guranjit for the attack. The assailants before attacking me told me that my husband had hired them to kill me. However,my husband has been trying to convince me that he was innocent, and Gurdeep Singh, his first cousin,or his uncle Ajaib Singh could be guilty as they had been trying to usurp his property. The police has failed to question both the men, Kaur said. Kaur, who was Guranjits third wife, said,My husband was married with two children, but divorced her. Later,Guranjit married another girl, but wanted to divorce her as soon as she received a citizenship, and marry her off to Gurdeep Singh,so that he too could come to Canada. However,Guranjit married me without informing me about his previous marriages. My husband wanted to divorce his second wife,so that he could take me to Canada. However,Gurdeep did not want this to happen, else his chances of going to Canada would be ruined. On the day of the attack I saw Gurdeep Singh at the place where I was attacked. The police have not yet questioned Gurdeep Singh, she added. Harvinder Singh,Station House Officer,Nihalsinghwala, said,We have been conducting an inquiry and will ensure that justice is served. We are not trying to protect anyone, but the process will take time.
