Moga police tighten noose around drug traders

According to SSP Ashok Baath,this has been done “to discourage them from indulging in drug trade”.

“The district police had sent 25 cases of property attachment to the state government. Of these orders for 24 were issued. One recommendation was withdrawn after acquittal of one person,” said the SSP.

He said,“During 2009,we recovered 31.22 kg of opium,262.59 quintals of poppy husk,162 grams smack,1 kg charas,13,724 injections,2.68 crore tablets of psychotropic substance,71,655 bottles of illegally stored cough syrups,19 kg powdered psychotropic drugs and 25 grams of heroin. As many as 164 persons were arrested and 131 cases were registered under the NDPS Act.”

Baath said the police have come down heavily on chemists who store psychotropic drugs without proper documents. Drugs worth lakhs of rupees were recovered from the chemists in the last few months.
