Dera Bassi MLA Kuljeet Singh Randhawa Sunday visited the Tiwana embankment of the Ghaggar river along with senior administrative and police officials to assess the situation. He assured residents that the administration is fully prepared and alert to deal with any emergency arising from rising water levels.
Appealing to the public to stay away from the riverbanks, the MLA said, “People must extend full cooperation to the administration. Those who can provide tractors, trolleys, or essential items should come forward in support.” He directed officers to remain stationed at the embankment around the clock and said that poclain and JCB machines have been deployed, while MGNREGA workers are actively filling sandbags to reinforce vulnerable stretches.
Condolences to bereaved family
Later, Randhawa visited Lalru to meet the family of farmer Janak Raj, who tragically lost his life due to the strong current in the Jharmal river. Extending sympathy, he said, “The government will ensure due financial assistance, and efforts will be made to provide compassionate employment to an eligible family member.”
Special girdawari ordered
The MLA announced a special girdawari (crop loss assessment) in the flood-hit villages of Sarseeni, Sadhanpur, and Khajur Mandi, where heavy water flow destroyed standing crops. He assured that the matter would be raised with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for disbursal of relief from the Special Relief Fund.
Randhawa also instructed the preparation of new stone-laying estimates to strengthen weak embankments, stressing that “all embankments in Dera Bassi constituency will be fortified with stone pitching to protect farmers and residents from recurring flood threats”.
