Minor girl alleges ‘sexual harassment’ by 2 classmates,school cleaning staff

Taking cognisance of the complaint lodged by the father of a class VI student of a prominent school,the Chandigarh Police has today registered a case on charges of “using words,gestures,acts,intending to insult the modesty of a woman” and initated investigations.

The ‘victim’ – a student of class VI of St. Stephen’s School,Sector 45,has alleged that she was being ‘harassed’ by two of her classmates,including a girl student for the last three years and a cleaning staff member of the school had also started misbehaving with her for the last over few months. The girl had joined the school in 2006 in Class I. As per the complaint,she is being harassed since Class III.

“The girl’s father has named a few of her classmates,in written complaint,which we are verifying. The investigations are on,” said Station House Officer (SHO) of police station Sector-34,Inspector Kripal Singh.

“My daughter has been under deep stress since last three years. She has been fainting quite frequently in last couple of weeks due to being traumatised by the regular incidents of her molestation at the school,” said the mother.

“Our counsellors looked into the matter last week. It is absolutely clear that nothing of the sort has happened in the school. It was instead found that the girl has been troubling many of her classmates including the two boys with her abusive language,” said G Jacob,Headmaster of St Stephen’s school.

Chronology of events

September 2 the ‘victim’ girl told her mother that she was being sexually harassed by her classmates. The girl’s parents took her to school,informed the schoolauthority regarding allegations.

September 2-8 The parents of children,who are now accused by the ‘victim’ were called to the school; both sides met each other in front of school authorities; but the girl’s parents were not satisfied. Written assurances were also given to the girl’s parents that she shall not be disturbed by the classmates.

September 8 Girl’s family moved a complaint to the Chandigarh Police. The school authorities allegedly refused the the girl to enter the school without the completion of police enquiry.

September 9 A compromise was reached between the girl’s parents and parents of the children,whom the girl was accusing of harassment. The same compromise was attested by Chandigarh Police Sub-Inspector,at Police Post-Burail,under the jurisdiction of Police Station 34.

September 12 The girl’s parents met Education Secretary,VK Singh; and Chandigarh police registers a case.
