Mind your language: Cops get lessons in manners

It’s a training that would go a long way in improving the ‘image’ of city policemen. A batch of UT police constables is currently being taught to be 'polite' and 'courteous' while dealing with the general public.

It’s a training that would go a long way in improving the ‘image’ of city policemen. A batch of UT police constables is currently being taught to be ‘polite’ and ‘courteous’ while dealing with the general public. The programme,which commenced on Wednesday at the Dr Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management in Sector 42,focuses on inculcating soft skills in policemen,who are otherwise perceived to be rough in etiquette.

While the programme has been initiated keeping in mind the upcoming Commonwealth Games,the one-month course also includes lessons on etiquette,conversation and politeness in all public dealings. Besides,the policemen will also be taught ways to sharpen their communication skills,a senior police officer said.

Inaugurated by SSP Headquarters Alok Kumar,the first batch of 30 constables have been handpicked as part of an initiative under the umbrella of ‘Tourism Police’.

The need for upgrading the skills of policemen was felt keeping in view the large number of tourists visiting the city every year.

Apart from this,the programme also comprises of a redressal mechanism where the policemen will air their grievances and the problems they face during their day to day work.

The training will also cover public safety and security of domestic and international tourists and guiding them about the various facilities available and places of tourist interest.

A senior officer also said that it has been observed that policemen are not very polite on the telephone. “We expect policemen to speak politely. They will be taught to say ‘thanks for calling’ after every call,” said an officer. “The programme basically focuses on behavioural patterns of policemen with emphasis on making their relationship with the people better,” said Alok Kumar.
