Mayor of London borough touts English democracy

The Mayor of Hounslow,a borough of London,Amrit Mann, was in the city on Wednesday and said that the political arena in India was upside down,“Instead of the politicians being accessible to the people who elected them, they become more elusive.”

The Mayor of Hounslow,a borough of London,Amrit Mann, was in the city on Wednesday and said that the political arena in India was upside down,“Instead of the politicians being accessible to the people who elected them, they become more elusive.”

Mann migrated with his parents to London when he was three-years-old and later followed his father’s footsteps and joined the Labour Party. Mann said that they try to keep the promises they made during the elections. “People here should ask the politicians what they would do for them when elected. This is what the electorate does when we go out to seek votes. In India the incentives offered are akin to buying votes,” he said.

Even though the population of Indians in London is increasing and so is their political influence,Mann claims that the people vote keeping in view the work that is done and not on the basis of colour,“Among the people who voted for me,a majority were the indigenous population. We tend to compartmentalise people here on basis of caste, colour and region. Candidates should be judged on the basis of their ability.”

During interaction with the Mayor, councillors and officials at MC,Mann stressed upon the need to create awareness among masses regarding segregation of garbage. Later a programme was held at Punjab Kala Bhawan,Sector 16 where Mann was honoured.
