‘Many raped inmate as part of conspiracy’

“The victim has been raped by several employees of Nari Niketan and all attempts have been made to destroy the evidence.

“The victim has been raped by several employees of Nari Niketan and all attempts have been made to destroy the evidence. There is a hidden conspiracy behind the crime and the investigation needs continuous sustained custodial interrogation (of the accused) to unearth the entire conspiracy,” said the police in court on Thursday, seeking four-day police remand of the third accused in the Nari Niketan rape case,Bijender, who was arrested on Wednesday. The court agreed to send him to two days of police custody.

The counsel for the police added that more employees of the Nari Niketan needed to be interrogated to solve the case.

The police alleged that Bijender raped the victim,a mentally challenged girl who was an inmate of the Niketan,in the bathroom at the rear of the institute. The girl has reportedly identified the accused from the photos. “The victim was interviewed in the presence of a social worker and she had disclosed that there were three persons who raped her many times,” said the police, adding that it has been repeatedly stressed by the UT’s senior standing counsel in the Punjab and Haryana High Court that a third person was involved in the case. Bijender, the third accused, has been serving at Nari Niketan for three years as attendant and was incharge of the rear portion of the institute. He is a resident of Sector 56.

The victim, meanwhile,is said to be more confident in her statements and is able to recall the names and faces of the accused, according to the police. The case dates back to April. The police have so far arrested watchman Jamuna Das,guard Bhupinder Singh,sweeper-cum-attandant Kamla, nurse Maya Devi, besides Bijender,in the case.
