Among the names that adore the walls of DAV College, Chandigarh, is Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra. On Sunday afternoon, as 22-year-old Haryana shooter Manu Bhaker became the first Indian woman to win a medal in shooting with a historic bronze in Paris Olympics, her name was etched in the college’s rich sporting legacy.

“Manu Bhaker has written her name in Olympics history for India as well as in the sporting history of DAV College. She joined the college in 2022 and enrolled in MA in Public Administration and was to appear for the second year final exams.

Since she could not appear for the final exams, she is currently pursuing a diploma in mass communications. Her biggest strength has been her mental strength and she has proven that today after that debacle in Tokyo, where her pistol malfunctioned. She has become the pride of DAV College as well as the whole country with this bronze medal,“ said Associate Professor Amanendra Mann speaking to The Indian Express over the phone from Paris.

While the youngster had done her graduation from Delhi University, Manu along with other international shooters decided to enroll at Chandigarh college in 2022. While Manu could not taken her final exams in MA Public Administration this year, she is expected to appear for the exams after her return from Olympics as a special case from Panjab University.

Manu, who is among the six Indian shooters in Paris Olympics from the DAV College, has also been regularly attending the college’s events as well as programmes of Late Aryan Mann Foundation constituted in the memory of Associate Professor Amanendra Mann’s son who succumbed to a brain tumour.

“Last year, Manu came to the function where we distributed sports kits to poor students at Panjab University. She was excited to meet the young players from the university and listened to almost every athlete with keen interest.

When the college honoured her during the Asian Games felicitation ceremony last year, she was the first to do bhangra. She enjoys her moments. She must be preparing for Monday’s mixed team events before she celebrates this time but we all will celebrate here together,” added Mann.

“Manu has joined the illustrious list of DAV College students, who have done the country proud in sports. The college had a student in each of India’s four cricket world cup wins, namely Kapil Dev, Yuvraj Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal apart from Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra.

Manu Bhaker has today marked her presence in the country’s Olympic history. Six shooters from our college are competing in the Paris Olympics and we hope for more medals coming India’s way,” said Jain.
