Drawing comparison between the two leading candidates for the post of prime minister — Dr Manmohan Singh and L K Advani — former chief minister and Congress campaign committee chairman Capt Amarinder Singh today said only Manmohan Singh could take the country to newer heights, while with Advani as PM,the country would be “mired in communalism”.

He was addressing a public rally here, before he accompanied party candidate Partap Singh Bajwa to file his nomination papers from Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency. “Keep in mind while voting that your choice of MP will have a direct bearing on who the next PM will be,” he urged the voters, adding,“Advani at the top post would lead to communal riots and Babri-like incidents.”

So far,Capt was mainly taking up local issues in his speeches across the state, but today he devoted a major part of his speech to the issue of who the next PM would be.

On Bathinda, where his son Raninder Singh is pitted against CM Parkash Singh Badal’s daughter-in-law,Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal’s wife Harsimrat Kaur,he said,“The whole Badal family is campaigning for Harsimrat, but Raninder is taking them on all alone. This shows their apprehension.”

Senior Congress leaders Ashwani Sekhari,Tript Inder Singh Bajwa,Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Khushhal Behal were also present.

Meanwhile, chaos prevailed during the filing of nomination by Bajwa. A major rush headed towards the office of SDM Vimal Setia, who denied the entry of photographers to his office. This angered the leaders, but Harpreet Sandhu,Bajwa’s lawyer, intervened and the managed to bring the situation under control.
