‘Manhandling’ of court guard: FIR filed against Inspector
The police informed the court that an FIR has now been registered against the accused officer.

After the Mohali court ordered the registration of a case against Inspector Jashanpreet Singh under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for allegedly manhandling a court guard and obstructing official duty, the police Friday finally submitted its response to the court after being granted an additional opportunity to do so.
The police informed the court that an FIR has now been registered against the accused officer. The development comes a day after the court reprimanded the Sohana police station for not filing a response or seeking an extension despite being directed to do so in an earlier hearing on Thursday.
The incident had occurred on July 6, 2025, when senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikramjit Singh Majithia was scheduled to be produced in court. However, since it was a Sunday, all court complex gates were closed. Baljeet Singh, a security guard posted at the court gate, was on duty.
Inspector Jashanpreet Singh reportedly asked the guard to open the gate, but the guard requested authorisation from the court, as per protocol. Enraged by the denial, Inspector Jashanpreet allegedly used his position to intimidate the guard, forcibly pushed him aside, snatched the keys, and opened the gate himself.
Following the incident, Senior Civil Judge Anish Goyal was informed and instructed the guard to undergo a medical examination. Though the guard initially refused to press charges, court reader Pawan Kumar filed an official complaint, calling it “an offence against the State”.
Despite the court’s directions and CCTV footage confirming the assault, no action was initially taken by the police. This prompted the court to review the footage personally. The judge remarked that Inspector Jashanpreet’s conduct was not a private dispute but a criminal act committed against a public servant on duty, classifying it as a non-compoundable offence and a crime against the state.
The court directed the Station House Officer (SHO) of Sohana to file an FIR under relevant sections of the BNS, including sections 115(2), 132, 221, 304, and other applicable provisions. The court also noted that it was perhaps the first time a case had been registered against a police officer on the orders of the court for assaulting a public servant while performing official duties.
