Man given 10-year jail term for raping minor

A local court,on Wednesday,sentenced a Sector 56 resident to 10 year imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old resident of Snehalaya,an orphanage in Maloya.

A local court,on Wednesday,sentenced a Sector 56 resident to 10 year imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old resident of Snehalaya,an orphanage in Maloya. The court of District and Sessions Judge V P Sirohi held Om Parkash (27) alias Prakash Masih guilty and also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.

He raped the victim at her maternal grandmother’s house in Bapu Dham in July,2010. Prakash raped the minor girl after he found her alone at the house as her grandmother had gone for work.

After returning to Snehalaya,the girl complained of pain in her abdomen and was examined by a doctor at the orphanage. The matter came to light when she was referred to Government Multi- Specialty Hospital (GMSH),Sector 16,where a medical examination confirmed that she was over three months pregnant. Based on the victim’s statement,the accused was arrested in September 2010 and had been in judicial remand since.

Earlier,the victim’s grandmother had sought permission from the court for medical termination of the pregnancy. The court granted permission to undergo an abortion after taking the consent of the victim and her grandmother.
