A fortnight after a Sangrur court awarded death penalty to a person after finding him guilty of killing his four-day-old daughter, the convict,Mukesh Kumar (28) committed suicide in Patiala jail on Friday.
Using a cloth (parna) meant for covering the head,Mukesh hanged himself with a water pipe. A jail official and two inmates tried to revive him,but he could not be saved. The jail doctor pronounced him dead at 3.08 pm, said Patiala jail Superintendent L S Jakhar.
After being shifted to Patiala jail on November 16,Mukesh told an inmate that he was innocent and had not killed his daughter, a jail official said.
On a complaint filed by Mukeshs wife,a case of murder was registered against him on January 21 at city police station in Sangrur. He allegedly gagged his four-old-daughter when she was alone. Mukesh, originally from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, was residing in Sangrur at the time of incident.
On November 9,Sangrur District and Session Judge M S Chauhan had pronounced capital punishment for Mukesh.
