The Ludhiana police arrested a man on Thursday for allegedly making repeated extortion calls to noted industrialist Gurmeet Singh Kular, who is the managing director of Kular Sons, and president of the Federation of Industrial and Commercial Organisation (FICO).

Kular had also unsuccessfully contested the Assembly election from Atam Nagar constituency in the 2017 on a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ticket.

According to Kular, he began receiving extortion calls in January this year, with the accused initially demanding Rs 1 crore. “For a while the calls stopped, but over the past three days I again started getting calls from an international number or sometimes from an ‘unknown/private number’. This time the demand had increased to Rs 2.50 crore along with threats to defame me,” Kular said.

He further alleged that the accused even circulated a fake letterhead of the ‘Ramgarhia Council UK’ on social media, carrying baseless allegations against him. “When I got it checked, I found that the signatory mentioned in the letterhead doesn’t even exist. It was a deliberate attempt to blackmail me by maligning my image,” he added.

Kular said he later learned that the accused had a criminal history and was previously booked in Haryana for demanding Rs 1 crore as extortion.

SI Balwant Singh, SHO, division number 6 police station, confirmed that an FIR has been registered in the matter and further investigations are underway.
