MC Commissioner, Dr Shena Aggarwal, stated that garbage burning is against the solid waste management rules, 2016. (FILE) Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) has taken suo motu cognisance of garbage burning incidents reported in leisure valleys situated in BRS Nagar (opposite DAV school) and Sarabha nagar.
Two separate challans of Rs 5,000 each have been issued against the violators for violating the solid waste management rules, 2016.
For leisure valley in Sarabha nagar, the challan has been issued against the contractor firm which is working to renovate the green belt. It was found that the contractor’s staff had put the waste on fire. The challan for burning waste in BRS leisure valley has been issued against the Superintending Engineer (SE) of Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT).
Civic body officials stated that BRS Nagar leisure valley falls under the jurisdiction of LIT, due to which the challan has been issued in the name of SE, LIT.
Further the contractor and the LIT authorities have also been directed to ensure that a staff member remains deputed at the respective sites, so that no such incident is reported in the coming time. A letter in this regard has also been issued to LIT authorities. MC Commissioner, Dr Shena Aggarwal, stated that garbage burning is against the solid waste management rules, 2016.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has also taken strict note of the same in the past as it causes air pollution.
Dr Aggarwal stated that strict directions have been issued to the officials for issuing hefty challans against the violators. She also appealed to the residents to support the authorities in proper solid waste management and stop burning of waste.
