A man from Akalgarh village of Ludhiana has succumbed to bullet injuries after his nine-year-old son “accidentally” opened fire from his licenced weapon on Sunday. He succumbed to his injuries at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Monday, said police.

Daljit Singh (45) was travelling in his vehicle with his son and wife when the freak incident happened on Sunday. The family was on the way to meet Daljit’s sister when his son pressed trigger of his licenced weapon, said police. He was rushed to DMCH after a bullet pierced his back and entered the stomach. He underwent surgery at DMCH but could not be saved, said Ludhiana rural police.

ASI Sukhwinder Singh, in-charge Lohatbaddi police post (under Sadar Raikot police station), said that according to the statement of Jasmeen Kaur, wife of the deceased, Daljit was sitting at the wheel while their son was on the back seat. “According to his wife, Daljit was behind the wheel and trying to take out the weapon which was inside his seat cover on the backside. When it did not come out, his son tried to help and while taking out the weapon, he accidentally pulled the trigger. The bullet pierced through Daljit’s back and then entered his stomach,” said the ASI.

Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC and sent the body for autopsy.
