Days after one of the two brothers died when the duo allegedly tried to kill themselves by self-immolation after a Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) team reached Onkar Vihar of the Jamalpur area to raze their “illegal” shanty on August 29, the second brother also died on Friday. The elder brother had died on August 30.

ASI Gurmeet Singh, inquiry officer in the case, said that Anmol (21) died at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana, while undergoing treatment for severe burns. His elder brother Beeru (30) had died of burns at the Government Medical College & Hospital in Chandigarh’s Sector-32.

According to police, Beeru and his brother Anmol attempted suicide after MC officials reached their locality on August 29 to remove shanties built on “illegally occupied government land”. One of the shanties belonged to the brothers.

A spokesperson for the MC, however, said the family had encroached on 71 square yards of government-owned land and failed to vacate it despite repeated notices and warnings. After the MC team reached there, the brothers allegedly set themselves on fire and then also attempted to ‘set MC officials on fire’ by trying to hug the civic body officials, while other family members poured petrol on them.

After the incident, police had booked both brothers, their four sisters and Beeru’s wife for allegedly “trying to pour kerosene and set MC team members on fire”.

The FIR was registered under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 336 (act endangering life of others), and 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) at the Division No 7 police station.

ASI Gurmeet Singh said that police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC after the death of both brothers.
