A low-intensity explosion was reported in the district court complex of Ludhiana in Punjab, Thursday, officials said. The sound of the blast led to panic and heavy police force was rushed to the spot.
According to the police, the blast took place after a sweeper had put a pile of garbage on fire and “there was no malafide intention or foul play behind it’.
“Probably some glass bottles in the garbage exploded which led to a minor blast. A sweeper had put a pile of garbage on fire in the parking area,” said Inspector Neeraj Chaudhary, Station House Officer, division number 5 police station.
ACP (Civil Lines) Jasroop Kaur Batth while speaking to the media, said: “The malkhana (storeroom where police records are kept) was being cleaned and scrap was taken out. A sweeper had put a pile of garbage on fire and a glass bottle inside it exploded. There was no malafide intention or foul play. We request residents of Ludhiana not to spread or believe in any rumours which are calling it an act of terror.”
A blast by terrorists had rocked the Ludhiana court complex on December 23, 2021, that left one person killed and six others injured. The case was taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) which said that the IED was smuggled across the border via a drone.
